History of GB3AE

The plan to build the first and still the only six meter repeater in Wales started back in 1995, by members of the Tenby Amateur Radio Club, however the club sadly folded in early 1996, at which point four of the members formed the Tenby Radio Repeater Group to carry on the work they had first started, This number soon dropped to two as work commitments took two of the founding members out of the county.

Back in 1995 the UK band plan did not permit the use of 6m repeaters and it took over 2½ years of lobbying to get the rules changed, also and it is hard to believe these days when every one has the internet, back then no one had it and trying to get any information was a right pain, and it took the group almost as long to fined out how to build the cavity filters as it took to  getting the law changed and to allow the use of 6m repeaters  in the UK (these days I could type into Google 6m cavity filters and get the information we need in  less than 10 minutes).

GB3AE was the first 6 meter repeater in the UK to be licensed but unfortunately with in days of getting permission for the repeater the group lost the use of the site they were planning to use and although we found a new site with in just a few days later we had to reapply for the new license and this took another year to come through, however this did give Dave GW0WBQ the repeater keeper at the time to source the parts to build the repeater.

In 1998 Members of the Cleddau Amateur Radio Society and Tenby Radio Repeater Group joined together to raise funds to help with the setting up and running of GB3AE

1999 Saw the setting up of Cleddau Amateur Radio Society & GB3AE Awards now called Amateur Radio Awards however what ever it’s called the awards programme is designed to raise funds for GB3AE, more details about the awards programme can be found at www.amateur-radio-awards.org.uk

In May 2000 GB3AE finally went on the air, and then in the summer of 2001 Evan GW4AKZ joined the team, Evan had worked in the past in commercial radio and his knowledge helped with some outstanding  problems that have cropped up.

2002 The PMR mast which was being used by a commercial company become redundant and the group got permission to resite the repeater aerial onto it (mast in Photo), which increased the repeater coverage and sensitivity.

2004 sadly Dave GW0WBQ the repeater keeper died! This was especially sad as Dave was only 59 and Evan GW4AKZ took on the job of repeater keeper, 2007 Richard MW0XDT became deputy keeper and the Cleddau Amateur Radio Society formally adopted the repeater (although the repeater group will still be know as the Tenby Radio Repeater Group), The group has one or two ideas to improve the repeater, however before we can do that the group needs to build a new set of cavity filters.
