WHAT IS  AMATEUR RADIO

Amateur Radio is a unique, fascinating and friendly hobby that captivates the interest of millions of people around he world. It encompasses a huge range of activities, from people communicating with someone down the street, people tinkering with old radios right up to those talking to the International Space Station using the latest digital technology. Many Radio Amateurs are working at the cutting edge of radio communications technology whilst  others just to tinker with old radios

WHAT DO I NEED

In the UK you need to have an Amateur Radio Licence in order to transmit. This involves you taking and passing a Radio Amateur exam. Licences come in three types Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. Each level allows you even more access to the radio spectrum and power. You must start with the foundation licence before going on to the intermediate and advanced.

HOW CAN I GET MY LICENCES

Best way to start is by contacting your local radio club. They should have a member that can help advise you about taking the foundation exam and any courses they may be running. It is not necessary to take a course but if you have never had any previous radio experience it is good advice to take any help that is offered, and while there is no guarantee that you will pass the exam first time most instructors have a high rate of success. Anyway you will need him to help to organize the written part of the exam and to take you in the practical..
