History of lighthouse There has been a lighthouse on the site since medieval times. The present Lighthouse tower dates from 1868 when the lantern made by Simpsons of London was fitted with a Chance 1st Order optic. At first it operated as the front light with its associated rear light inland, but this was discontinued in 1910. The station was electrified in 1958 and automated in 1998 and is now control by the Trinity House Operations Centre at Harwich over 300 miles away |
